आणि भेट राहून गेली.

काही दिवसांपूर्वी ब्रेल मॅन ऑफ इंडिया स्वागत थोरात यांच्या स्पर्शज्ञान या ब्रेल पक्षिकासाठी,
’गेले राहून’ म्हणजेच आपल्या आयुष्यातील असं काय आहे जे राहून गेलंय ह्या विषयावरचे लेख मागवले होते. पण वेळेअभावी आणि आळशीपणामुळे लिहायचं राहून गेले. ती वेळ लवकरच येईल असं मला स्वप्नात देखील वाटलं नव्हतं. आज त्या महान विदुषीला भेटायचं राहून गेले.ह्या राहून गेलेल्या गोष्टीबद्दल फार खंत वाटते आहे. त्या विदुषी म्हणजे कालच ज्यांचे दुःखद निधन झाले त्या पद्मश्री पुरस्कारप्राप्त आंतरराष्ट्रीय शास्त्रज्ञ प्रोफ. डॉ. रोहिणी म. गोडबोले.
मला वर्ष नक्की आठवत नाही पण माझी लेक अकरावी-बारावीत असतानाची गोष्ट असेल. मराठी विज्ञान परिषदेच्या अंकात डॉक्टर रोहिणी गोडबोले यांच्या आईचं पत्र आलं होतं. डॉ.रोहिणी गोडबोले यांच्या बद्दल त्यांनी भरभरून लिहिलं होतं. ते पत्र मला माझ्या मुलीने मला वाचायला दिलं.
योगायोगाने त्यानंतरच्याच वर्षी माझ्या लेकीला IISc मध्ये प्रवेश मिळाला आणि त्यात पुढला योगायोग असा की गोडबोले मॅडम पहिल्या तीन सत्रांसाठी तिच्या faculty advisor होत्या… त्यावेळेला तिला झालेला आनंद हा तिच्या चेहऱ्यावर स्पष्ट दिसत होता. शास्त्रज्ञा बद्दल असणारी आत्मीयता आणि ओढ तिला लहानपणापासूनच होती. त्यात आपण महाराष्ट्रातल्या आणि त्या सुद्दा महाराष्ट्रातल्या हे कितीही नाही म्हटलं तरी परराज्यातल्या संस्थेत जवळचं वाटत. अशा कर्तृत्ववान शास्त्रज्ञ आपल्याला काही काळ कोर्स मार्गदर्शक लाभणं हे नशिबात असावं लागतं. त्या advisor होत्या पण तिला विषय शिकवायला नव्हत्या. पण अत्यंत साध्या, निर्गवी आणि हसतमुख होत्या. मूर्ती लहान पण कीर्ती महान हे खरोखरच त्यांच्या बाबतीत होतं.
बरीच वर्षे त्या सायकल वरून संपूर्ण आयआयसीच्या कॅम्पस मध्ये फिरायच्या, अगदी साठीच्या पुढपर्यंत.
ती शिकत असताना, एक पालक म्हणून मला त्यांच्याशी काही संवाद साधायचा होता. म्हणून मी त्यांना मेल लिहिला. आणि लगेचच माझ्या मेलला त्यांचे भले मोठे उत्तर आले. त्यांना असलेली आपुलकी जिव्हाळा आणि त्याचबरोबर आम्हाला दिलेली आश्वासकता त्यांच्या पत्रातून जाणवली. त्यांनी लगेच मुलीला बोलवून घेऊन तिच्या शंका दूर देखील केल्या. बारावी नंतर आपण एखाद्या संस्थेत जातो तेव्हा अशा मोठ्या व्यक्तींबरोबर संवाद साधायला मुलं आदरयुक्त घाबरतात. पण ही दरी त्यांनी जाणवू दिली नाही. इथेच त्यांचा शास्त्रज्ञ असल्या तरी माणूस म्हणून असणार एक वेगळं व्यक्तिमत्व समोर आल. त्यांच्या निधनाची बातमी आल्यानंतर, त्यांच्याबद्दल आम्हाला माहीत नसलेल्या अनेक गोष्टी तिने सांगितल्या.
अलीकडे म्हणजे तीन-चार वर्षांपूर्वीची गोष्ट. मुंबई आकाशवाणीवर कार्यक्रम अधिकारी नेहा खरे हिने त्यांची मुलाखत घेतली होती. कारण होतं पद्मश्री पुरस्कार. त्यावेळेला देखील मी त्यांना भेटायला जाऊ शकले नाही. पण फोनवर मात्र आम्ही संवाद साधला आणि मन मोकळेपणाने बोललो. आपण एवढ्या मोठ्या व्यक्तीबरोबर बोलत आहोत याचे दडपण त्यांच्याशी बोलताना निघून गेल होत. आणि तो भेटीचा योग मात्र राहिला तो राहिलाच. वुमन इन सायन्स यासाठी अखंड धडपडणाऱ्या अशा या विदुषीला आमच्या कुटुंबीयातर्फे भावपूर्ण श्रद्धांजली🙏

गोडबोले मॅडम मला 1995 मध्ये शिकवायला होत्या. त्या सुमारास त्यांनी मुंबई विद्यापीठ सोडून बंगलोर येथे मुक्काम वाढवायला सुरुवात केली होती. त्यामुळे माझा उल्लेख त्या नेहमी ‘माझा (मुंबई विद्यापीठातील शेवटचा) विद्यार्थी’ या अर्थी करायच्या. माझे खवचट मित्र मला.. तू आल्यामुळे त्यांनी डिपार्टमेंट सोडलं असं छळायचे! त्यातून मी रुईयाचा आहे म्हणून विशेष कौतुक!
पुढे आम्ही जपान मध्ये असतांना त्या तिथे आल्या होत्या. जेवायची पंचाईत नको म्हणून सोय सुजुने करायचे ठरले होते. अर्थात सुजू IISc ची असल्याने तिच्या बद्दल त्यांना सॉफ्ट कॉर्नर होताच! मी, सुजू, मॅडम व सध्या STFC UK चे विज्ञान नेतृत्त्व करणारी नाशिकची डॉ. दीपा अनगल-कालीनिन अशा खूप चर्चा झाल्या.
पुढे विविध ठिकाणी विशेषत: आंतरराष्ट्रीय लिनीअर कोलाईडर प्रकल्पा संदर्भात भेट व्हायची. बंगलोरला जाऊन कॉफी घेत त्यांच्या गप्पा (मुख्यत्वे टीका!) ऐकणे असा कार्यक्रम झाला.
विज्ञान क्षेत्रात महिलांकडे जाणीवपुर्वक केले जाणारे दुर्लक्ष व सर्वसाधारणपणे त्यांची केली जाणारी कुचंबणा यावर त्या सतत टीका करायच्या. मी आयोजित केलेल्या एका व्याख्यानाची सुरुवात करतांना त्यांनी लेपल माईक होल्डर साडीत कसा खोचू असे विचारले! पुढे हा साधा विचारसुद्धा आपण करत नाही यावर माझ्यासह सर्वांना लेक्चर दिले! मला विशेष मराठी मध्ये! याचा विचार जगात कुठेही केला जात नसेल तर आपण यावर विचार केलाच पाहिजे हा ठाम आग्रह. मला वाटतं घटना छोटी असली तरी अत्यंत महत्त्वपूर्ण होती. आज आमच्या व्याख्यान कक्षात सीलिंग माईक आहेत व महिलांना लेपल होल्डरची गरज लागत नाही. कुठेतरी सुरुवात होते व त्यामागे गोडबोले मॅडम सारख्या सतत मागे लागणाऱ्या शिक्षकांचे खूप मोठे योगदान असते.
भारतीय महिला अभ्यासकांचे कार्य पुस्तक रूपात संग्रहीत करणाऱ्या, अत्यंत तळमळीच्या शिक्षिकेला, पद्मश्री रोहिणी गोडबोले मॅडम यांना विनम्र श्रद्धांजली!

Manuel Drees had sent some old photographs with Rohini, dating back as old as in 1993. Write up about them and the photos given below.

It shows (from left) Dileep Jatkar, Ashok Sen, myself, Sumati Rao (Ashok’s wife), and Rohini. Dileep was then a postdoc at the TIFR, he’s now at the HRI; Ashok was staff at the TIFR, and became one of the founding staff members of the MRI (now HRI) Allahabad; Sumati was then at the Bhubaneswar Institute of Physics, and visiting Ashok; Rohini was professor at Bombay University, but spent quite a lot of time at the TIFR. I was moving from DESY (Hamburg) to Madison, Wisconsin. Since it’s very cold in Madison in winter, I’d decided to spend about 10 weeks in India, from early November 92 to mid-January 93, mostly at the TIFR at the invitation of Probir Roy and D.P. Roy. The photo was taken by Debajyoti Choudhury, then also postdoc at the TIFR, now professor at Delhi University. (I know this since I have another, otherwise very similar photo where he has taken my place.).

We’d had a longer workshop with Argonne Lab on present and future colliders from March to June 1993; I believe Rohini came for (part of?) this workshop. The third person in the photo is Mike Doncheski, who was then a postdoc at Madison and is now at Penn State Mont Alto; I don’t think he had many interactions with Rohini, so you could crop him from the photo. The photo might have been taken by Mihoko Nojiri, who also was a Madison postdoc at the time; she’s now a senior physicists at KEK and IPMU in Japan. (I believe this was the first meeting between them. Mihoko to some extent plaid Rohini’s role in Japan, as trailblazer for women in (particle) physics. However, as far as I know Mihoko mostly did this by being an example, she didn’t push for emancipation of female scientists the way Rohini did. Rohini and Mihoko knew each other fairly well, and collaborated in various workshops, but I’m not aware of any joint journal publications.)
